Week 7 MWC Football Thoughts

I know the only people who care to read my sports opinions are my brothers, so this is for you guys (everyone else stop reading, especially if you're a Y fan). Here are my random thoughts in no particular order...

Should we be concerned that the Ute offense isn't producing as much as we expect? Perhaps. But I say if you're winning, who cares? They produce when they have to, as seen last week against Oregon State. Today they could have had 0 yards of total offense and we still would have won.

Our defense is the best overall U defense I can remember. Our special teams is solid. And our offense is great when it has to be. Sure, we're not as good of a team as we were during our Fiesta Bowl run, but if we run the table, at least to me, that will make this year even more special.

How sad to be a Poke fan right about now (sorry Curtis & Jen). Joe Glenn is definitely on his way out and I'll be shocked if he gets another season. It's funny to think how fast a great University can go south (pun intended). I remember only 10 years ago or so when Wyoming was consistently near the top of the conference. Scary to think how fast things can change. Look how crappy CSU is now.

I was glad to watch the game this year from the comfort of mom & dad's house (I have Dish and don't get the Mtn.) The game in Laramie 2 years ago was one of the most miserable experiences of my life, the only redeeming factor was spending time with Curtis & Jen. It was cold. Windy. The fans were ruthless. And the Utes got their butts kicked. Sweet redemption 2 years in a row. I was a little sad there weren't more Poke fans in the seats to witness our revenge, and I was sad we didn't kick any on sides kicks in the 4th quarter.

I'm surprisingly a little bit sad to say this, but BYU is probably the most overrated team in the country. Do you really think they deserve to be ranked up there with Florida, USC, and the rest? Yes, I'll give them the fact that they have the longest win streak in the country, but against who? Washington STILL hasn't won a game! Not one! UCLA is 2-3. I can't wait to see what happens Thursday night at TCU. I think the Y is in for a smack bottom. Please BYU, prove me wrong. Everyone in the state, myself included, is hoping for 2 undefeated teams going into the Nov. 22nd showdown. But I can't say I'll shed a tear if the Y loses on Thursday.

I was glad to see Florida spank LSU (except I was sad for Gary Crowton - I still find it hilarious that he now has a national championship under his belt) tonight, as they'll probably leapfrog the Y in the rankings. It'd fun to see the Y win and still slip like they did last week.

I was reading a comment on the Trib Utes Blog that made mention of a strange possibility... Even if the U finishes the season undefeated, if Boise State also finishes the season undefeated there is a good chance Boise State would be invited to a BCS bowl and the Utes would not! I'm not sure if this is the case for the Cougars as well, but isn't this the lamest thing you've ever heard? Let's hope it doesn't come down to this (meaning Boise loses - not us), but if it does, I can already imagine the outrage!

Speaking of BS, I mean BCS, I remember watching CSPAN or whatever channel it is that shows congressional hearings a few years back, and Senator and current VP candidate Joe Biden was leading an investigation into the unfairness of the BCS. It was around this time that the BCS made small changes, allowing one non-BCS team to participate if they meet certain eligibility requirements. I remember thinking how cool Joe Biden was, he seriously seemed pissed off and he let it show. So imagine my delight when I was on utefans.net and someone linked to this article from the Washington Post where Barack Obama said the following:

"I would have my attorney general investigate the possibility of instituting a college football playoff system through executive order. I'm tired of this nonsense at the end of every college football season."

Amen! I consider my political tastes pretty moderate, and quite honestly I haven't decided yet who I will vote for; but Barack, you definitely just scored yourself some points with me! Who cares if you don't fix the economy, don't improve our image with the rest of the world, don't cure cancer, global warming, and all the other problems all the left-wingers are so positive you're going to fix? If you fix the BCS mess you will go down as an American hero and perhaps the greatest US President of all time! (sorry George Washington and Abe Lincoln). I will personally start a campaign to get you on not just the $1 bill, but the $5, $10, $20 and $100! Let's get your mug on them all!

Ike, I am glad you are coming around on Obama. It may just be a hollow promise to suck up to voters, but at least he is talking about it.

Sounds like we agree on all points about the Utes. What scares me is that it will be us, not the Y, that already have one loss going into that last game. That New Mexico game really scares me. They always give us fits, especially at their place. That being said, even if we have one loss going into the Y game, I really, really like our chances against them.

Ike, I heard an interesting fact the other day... guess which team has the second longest win streak... The UTES!

Also, I don't entirely agree about our special teams... we've really struggled with punt returning.

I'll just smile and nod, and keep the rest of my thoughts to myself, thank you very much!

Nice work Ike. I'm so conflicted with the Utes this season. It sounds like (I've actually seen very little of them play and have had to listen online mostly) Brian is really having issues with being comfortable. I realize that this last week the conditions were awful, but if he doesn't throw for 300 yards, and hopefully no interceptions, I'll still be concerned. Casteel should be getting 100 yards a game. Mack and Asiata should be combining for 150 yards a game. It's frustrating to have so many weapons and little output. The defense and Sakoda are saving us.

I can't wait for Thursday night. BYU will get a major test. CSU rushed for like 25 yards against TCU.
