An interesting day at Jury Duty. It was a sexual abuse trial...not fun to even think about. Luckily, I wasn't selected to be on the final jury, so I was spared the details. I was actually hoping to be selected to the jury until I saw the defendant. Then I thought, "I don't want to be the person that decides to lock this dude up, whether he deserves it or not."
Anyway, there were originally 50 potential jurors that were summoned. Eventually they whittled it down to 16. Of those 16, they asked various questions that didn't eliminate any more (sounds like a reality show to me). Finally, they asked if any of them had close relatives or friends who've been the victims of sexual abuse. 7 people raised their hands. Seven! Out of 16! The judge took each one of them back into his quarters one by one. After about an-hour-and-a-half, 6 of 7 were excused from the jury pool.
Anyway, I'm a news buff and I've been hearing a lot lately about sexual abuse. What an epidemic in our country. Hurray for Oprah for helping to hunt them down. And to Dateline NBC for showing us how much our children are at risk.
If you're one of my friends reading in Utah, to find out if any of these pervs live in your neighborhood, click here. I bet you find one too close for comfort.
