Jana and I went and saw Enchanted last night. It was fun. Jana liked it much more than me, but I had a smile on my face for most of the film. And the more I thought about it (which is probably way too much), the more I wanted to share my 2 cents on dissecting the ways of Hollywood...
For years and years, movie studios have made films about an average joe (or jane) out of his (or her) element. Some of these movies have been ok or even quite good (ie. Chronicles of Narnia, The Matrix, Tarzan), but the majority of films that come to my mind were pretty horrible (Tim Allen in Jungle 2 Jungle, for instance).
Finally, it seems Hollywood is trying something new. Instead of placing a "real" character in an imaginary world, they're placing fairy-tale characters in the real world. Doesn't seem too groundbreaking, does it? After all, you say, you saw Kate & Leopold and it wasn't that good. Bill & Teds was alright, but definitely not groundbreaking. Let me clarify, I'm not talking about taking historical figures and placing them in a time they don't belong. That would fit with the other films above. Abraham Lincoln - you don't belong in the 20th century! It's overdone, and rarely clever. I'm talking about taking a fairy-tale character and placing them in our time.
The 2 films off the top of my head that tried this were both extremely successful - Elf, and Enchanted. Obviously, nothing replaces a good script, good acting, good filmmaking, etc. No duh. But it's fun to see Hollywood flip the coin, and if executed correctly, the results are hilarious.
